Pina Bausch’s final work, lovingly revived by beloved dancers from her company!

The choreographer Pina Bausch transformed twentieth-century performance with her innovative and shocking productions created with the Tanztheater approach of fusing dance and theatre. In 2007, she received the Kyoto Prize in commemoration of her achievements in breaking down the boundaries between dance and theatre and demonstrating new directions for the performing arts. Marking its first visit to Japan since Nelken (Carnations) in 2017, Tanztheater Wuppertal presents Sweet Mambo, Bausch’s one of the work before her untimely death in 2009. Now older and more experienced, the dancers who spent years with Bausch and originally premiered the work in 2008 bring it to the stage once again.

Pina Bausch

Born in Germany in 1940, Pina Bausch studied dance under Kurt Jooss at the Folkwangschule. She staged her first work, Fragment, in 1968. In 1971, she was invited to choreograph for the Wuppertal Ballet and was appointed its artistic director in 1973. The company was subsequently renamed Tanztheater Wuppertal and staged many innovative and shocking works that transcended the conventional notions of theatre and dance. Her major works include The Rite of Spring, Café Müller and Kontakthof. By demonstrating the diversity and possibilities of dance, Bausch’s work has had a significant influence on later generations of choreographers. In 2007, she was awarded the 23rd Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy as “a choreographer who has broken down the boundaries between dance and theatre and pioneered a new direction for theatrical art.” Bausch died in 2009.

Comprising dancers from around the world, Tanztheater Wuppertal gained international renown after Pina Bausch became artistic director in 1973, and established its signature Tanztheater (literally, “dance theatre”) style fusing the two mediums. It has undertaken numerous international co-productions in other cities and countries, and left an indelible mark on the performing arts. Following Bausch’s death, the company has carried on her legacy by actively engaging in staging productions and with whom it is now creating and staging new works. Starting with its inaugural visit in 1986 with Kontakthof, Tanztheater Wuppertal’s previous tours to Japan include Nelken (Carnations) (in 1989) and On the Mountain a Cry Was Heard (in 1993) at Kyoto Kaikan’s Hall 2. ‘Sweet Mambo’ marks the company’s first performances in Kyoto in thirty-two years.
