Founded in 1964, The Tokyo Ballet has continued to boast a wide repertoire of classics performed in full with the masterpieces of contemporary choreographers, and achieved great success with original works especially created for the company by three of the most important choreographers in recent times: Maurice Béjart, Jiří Kylián, and John Neumeier. It has to date given 764 overseas performances on 33 tours, appearing on the stages of some of the most famous stages in Europe, not least the Paris Opera, La Scala in Milan, and Vienna State Opera, and establishing a reputation as a world-class Japanese performing company both at home and abroad.
