The seven trumpets of the Apocalypse as shotguns or...?
A libidinous, Bacchic landscape unfolds...

Marlene Monteiro Freitas studied dance under Rosas artistic director Anne Teresa De Keersmaeke and has collaborated with the likes of François Chaignaud and Cecilia Bengolea in her impressive career. The winner of the Silver Lion for dance at the Venice Biennale 2018, she is today attracting attention all around the world for her outstanding talent. BACCHAE – PRELUDE TO A PURGE is the first time that Freitas has embarked on a project of this scale. Her choice of the Euripides tragedy The Bacchae as inspiration will not surprise those familiar with her work. This endeavor of applying a literary or psychological approach to dance is not a mere detour, though, but rather opens up the choreographer’s aesthetics. The human psyche finds itself torn by the contradictory forces of Apollo’s harmony and reason and the wild, instinctive influence of Dionysus (Bacchus). Her staging of The Bacchae evokes and disassembles the history of tragedy, while deftly evading expected narratives and rational interpretation. The performers are simultaneously the masters and puppets of sounds, freely shifting from dance movements to grotesque faces and theatrical gestures, all unfolding within the rich and powerful world that Marlene Monteiro Freitas constructs.

Marlene Monteiro Freitas

Born in 1979 Cape Verde, Marlene Monteiro Freitas is a lisbon-based dancer and choreographer. She studied dance at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels and at the Escola Superior de Dança and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon. The common denominator in the works she has choreographed is openness, impurity and intensity. Freitas has collaborated with many dancers including Kyoto Experiment past participating artists François Chaignaud, Cecilia Bengolea and Boris Charmatz. Since 2005 she has created and co-created over ten works that have been performed extensively at international festivals and institutions such as Festival TransAmériques, Centre Pompidou and HAU Hebbel am Ufer. In 2017 the Portuguese Society of Authors (SPA) awarded her work Jaguar (2015) the prize for best choreography. This year La Biennale di Venezia awarded Freitas the prestigious Silver Lion for Dance.
