PROGRAM
Mozart’s masterpiece “The Magic Flute” is presented as part of the Opera for High School Students
program for the first time. The opera is in the accessible form of a Singspiel, which mixes singing and
spoken dialogue. Among its well-known numbers are “Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja” (The birdcatcher am
I) and “Pa–, pa–, pa–,” while the aria by the Queen of the Night, “Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem
Herzen” (Hell’s vengeance boils in my heart), is another of its many highlights that always delight
audiences. The production is directed by William Kentridge, a world-famous visual artist who received
the 26th Kyoto Prize in 2010 in the Arts and Philosophy division. Newly produced by the New National
Theatre, Tokyo, conductor Ryuichi Sonoda and leading Japanese singers are joined by the Kyoto
Symphony Orchestra in bringing this classic opera to superb life.
