William Kentridge directs Mozart’s classic opera

Since the reopening of ROHM Theatre Kyoto in 2016, the Opera for High School Students has staged productions of The Marriage of Figaro, Madama Butterfly, The Magic Flute, and Don Pasquale. This marks the fourth staging of The Magic Flute in Kyoto. The accessible Singspiel musical drama is packed with highlights, including such familiar pieces as the aria “Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja,” the duet “Pa... pa... pa...,” and the Queen of the Night’s famous aria. Directed by William Kentridge, the staging is replete with his unique human philosophy, perfectly complemented by its power as visual art, and posing many questions to the audience.
