A leading duo from the global dance scene returns to Kyoto with a unique encounter between dub music and pointe shoes

With the frenzied performance of TWERK at Kyoto Experiment 2014, Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud made a lasting and immediate impression on audiences in Japan. The duo, whose background in conventional dance education evolved into a hunger for club culture and then a hybrid mix of the two, have now turned their attention to “music wall” sound systems which date back to the 1950s and are inextricably linked to the evolution of diverse Jamaican music. Dub is performed through powerful sound systems and goes far beyond mere entertainment. The intense vibrations of the music unify vast numbers of people and turn the gatherings into quasi-religious rituals. For DUB LOVE they collaborate with HIGH ELEMENTS, a Dub plates DJ from Réunion Island. The tension between the deep bass sounds and bright melodies creates an upbeat solar music. Classical ballet techniques, which eventually transform the bodies of dancers after challenging gravity for so long, mark out precise lines in the vibrating space. The result is a stripped-down experience of unyielding music and bodies.

Cecilia Bengolea & François Chaignaud

Cecilia Bengolea studied dance and philosophy at the University of Buenos Aires and François Chaignaud studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Danse de Paris. Since 2005, a sustained dialogue between these two dancers has produced an intelligent and vibrant body of work. Bengolea recently premiered her new creation Insect Train, which explores the world of insects and the relation between our bodies and nature, in Spring 2018. Chaignaud recently premiered a piece for the Carte Blanche Ballet (Norway) in May 2018. The pair received the Prix de la Révélation Chorégraphique from the Syndicat de la Critique in 2009 and were awarded the Emerging Artist Award at the Biennale de Gwangju for the entirety of their activities in 2014. Their work has been presented at international festivals including Festival d’Automne, Impulstanz Festival, and Festival d’Avignon. Following TWERK in 2014, this marks their second appearance at Kyoto Experiment.
