    撮影:松本成弘

In its 2017 premiere, Safari P's “Le Grand Cahier” caused a sensation when it challenged the audience by staging the very literary “style” of the twins’ diary, using five barren platforms, five actors, and words stripped of intonation.
In the 2025 version, with a new cast and new direction, the story’s apparent bleakness is gradually overturned, just as in the original novel. In turn, emerges the author Agota Kristof’s experience of a wartorn rural landscape and the human solitude that emerges from it.

Casts include Kosuke Ashiya, Yasuko Sasaki, and Tatsuya of Safari-P, as well as two guest stars: Kei Tsujimoto, a multi-talented artist who works as a dancer, choreographer and photographer, and Yuko Mori, an established dancer/choreographer who left a strong impression playing both a young girl and an old lady in a previous production of “SUKIMA (2023)”.
This is the first time since its premiere in 2017 that “Le Grand Cahier” has two female cast members. Following the Kyoto and Aichi productions will be a long-awaited Tokyo premiere.

Safari P

In July 2015, the company’s production of “This Property Is Condemned” (written by Tennessee Williams) won first prize at the Toga Theatre Artists’ Competition for Outstanding Director. The company’s six members are Kosuke Asiya, Tatsuya, Yasuko Sasaki, Akane Ikebe, Yasuyo Morinaga, and Akane Yamaguchi (as of March 2025). The company consists of performers (actors/dancers), technical staff (lighting/sound), and a direction team (director/dramaturg).
Until now, the company has mainly launched productions from existing plays and novels. The company’s production closely inspects the author’s biography and underlying historical backgrounds, and then extracts a minimum amount of text from the original writing. Taking advantage of the team of performers consisting of both actors and dancers, a combination of their bodies, minimal stage design and minimal texts are used to unravel unexpected yet glaringly present elements of the existing work, transforming it from its written form.
In June 2019, the company was invited to FemArt Festival 7th to perform “Le Grand Cahier” at ODA Theatre (Prishtina, Republic of Kosovo). “Le Grand Cahier” was also performed in October 2019, at the Setouchi Triennale 2019 Autumn season.
