“Have . . . have you ever wondered what . . . what would happen . . . if I died?”

A father talks about life insurance. He is surrounded by people who seem to be his family. A photographer who is apparently a brother keeps silently taking self-portraits. Since its premiere in 2016, Family Portrait has become one of akakilike’s signature work that the company has continued to revive.
Blurring the lines between theater, photography, and dance, out of the performance emerges a portrayal of the difficulty of breaking free from the institution of family, the inherent transience of that institution, and the cruelty of its development.

Midori Kurata

Born in 1987 in Mie, Midori Kurata graduated with a degree in moving image and performing arts from Kyoto University of Art and Design (today, Kyoto University of the Arts). She trained in classical and modern ballet from the age of three. Based in Kyoto, she is active as a director, choreographer, and dancer. In each work she creates, she engages with herself and others, using the performance structures to bring out the phenomena that arise as forms of fiction, and explore the possibilities of dance. Since 2016, Kurata has served as the head of akakilike, a performance group comprising only herself and a technical team, and aspiring to create an environment in which in the company work on an equal basis. She is a Saison Foundation Fellow I grantee. From April 2024, she will serve as artistic director for dance at Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre.
