In 2011, a year that saw the unprecedented disaster that was the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Tokyo Ballet and one of the top stars of the ballet world, Sylvie Guillem, undertook Hope Japan, a tour of the devastated Tohoku region and around Japan with a staging of Maurice Béjart’s Boléro and other pieces. Ten years on, we face yet another crisis in the form of the coronavirus pandemic raging across the world, threatening our lives and society as a whole, including the very existence of the performing arts. In the midst of this, Tokyo Ballet once again presents a program of performances centered on Boléro, which it is taking around the country to offer people hope and work toward social recovery.
