New National Theatre, Tokyo Opera for High School Students 2019 “Madama Butterfly”

The Opera for High School Students series presents opera performances for high school students. The 2019 production sees the return of Puccini's “Madama Butterfly” after its popular reception in 2017, featuring a cast of eminent Japanese opera talent and the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra conducted by Masahiro Joya. On a minimal yet large-scale stage, Tamiya Kuriyama’s directing superbly conjures up the world of the titular character who dies for love. His handling of the opera in such a way as to vividly bring out the inner dimensions of the characters will spark the imagination of high school students and inspire their interest in opera.
