A story and ballad passed down through the ages is taken apart as something alien yet modern, and reborn as a new musical about life, sexuality, and the sacred

ROHM Theatre Kyoto’s Repertory Premiere program partners with artists to produce a repertoire of work that can be staged in the long term. Following the staging in October 2017 of “Shinju Ten no Amijima” (The Love Suicides at Amijima) that generated much excitement, the second in this series is a co-production between ROHM Theatre Kyoto, Toyohashi Arts Theatre PLAT, and Kanagawa Arts Theatre. Based on the sutra ballads “Shintokumaru” and “Aigo no Waka,” the story and elements of “Sesshu Gappo ga Tsuji” (The Daughter of Tsuji) have passed down through the ages taking different forms in puppet theatre, Kabuki, literature, and modern theatre. Now Kinoshita-Kabuki and Yukinosuke Itoi collaborate on a retelling boldly adapted for contemporary audience as a large-scale musical.
