In this play, director Masato Nomura re-examines two themes at the core of his work—the idea of the hometown and family—through the lens of tourism and tourists, an increasingly familiar and much-discussed topic in Japan today that has also thrown up various unresolved social issues. Through interviews and fieldwork in Kyoto, one of Japan’s biggest tourist destinations, the play portrays a group of people in a place that attracts both domestic and international tourists, but which is also a hometown to others.

Masato Nomura (RETRONYM/Director)

Born in 1991. Based in Kyoto, Japan.
Working as a stage director since 2016. Member of the art collective “RETRONYM.” He creates and presents performances, video works and texts both inside and outside of theaters, with motifs based on the human psyche and experiences. Taking the introduction of theatrical elements into the actual relationships between people, places, and environments as a starting point, he develops a diverse range of activities that are not limited to the production of works. In recent years, I have been working on artworks and projects based on fieldwork on graves in the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture, and research in psychiatric and elderly care facilities. He has also participated as an actor and assistant director in works by Takuya Murakawa and Kuro Tanino. 2024 ACY Artist Fellows.

About RETRONYM
RETRONYM is the art collective team formed by three members: Semon Seto (actor), Momo Takechi (artist), and Masato Nomura (director). Formerly known as the Theater SOKUDO (2016-2021), they changed their way of gathering and became RETRONYM in 2022. Based on keywords such as the audience and the audience seats, which are the concerns of each member, they issue the group magazine “Super Relax” in free paper, curate special exhibitions, hold group exhibitions, and produce performances.
