A revival of the play first produced by the ROHM Theatre Kyoto Repertory Premiere series in 2020, it portrays the people who live in a certain seaside town.

synopsis
Seaside Town
In a town by the sea, the west end of this country. A man, Shinji, starts to live in a vacant house. He has lost his job in Tokyo and had nowhere to go, before coming back to his hometown. In a deserted rural town, a mediocre kind of fascism become apparent and, while feeling confused, Shinji gradually becomes familiarized with the mood. Unchanging communal bonds and blood relations step in, too. A “sign” appears in the daily lives and an inevitable incident was reported to Shinji.

Crisis at Culture Center
Yoshimura, Tsujii and Nakano who work at Culture Center are spending anxious time. As the administrator of Culture Center will be changed to a private company from the next fiscal year, they have been told that all the staff members will be laid off. One day, Nakano’s friend from his university visits Culture Center for an event that he is planning to organise. They go to the mountain to spend the weekend camping and sit around a bonfire. Meanwhile, Satooka, a high school student, who works part time at a convenience store, is told by her art club teacher, Kaminaga, that there will be a meteor shower on Saturday night and is feeling excited. At the pier of the port, a man stands keeping his eyes on the smugglers. A portrayal of three winter days, of the weekend, at a small city by the sea.

Profile
Masataka Matsuda
Born in Nagasaki Prefecture in 1962, Masataka Matsuda is a playwright and director as well as the head of marebito theater company. He received the Kishida Drama Award for Sea and Parasol in 1996, the Yomiuri Drama Award for Moon Cape in 1997, and the Yomiuri Literary Prize for Over Summer Sands in 1999. He formed marebito theater company in 2003. Its major productions include Performing Fukushima, presented as part of Festival/Tokyo 2018. Since 2012, he is a professor at Rikkyo University’s College of Contemporary Psychology Body Expression and Cinematic Arts course. He is also an instructor at ROHM Theatre Kyoto’s Theatre School Project for three years in a row.
