Media art roams around the theatre
The previous gaps in time and space have been rapidly filled by the development of media technology, and our lives and society have changed immensely. On the other hand, the advancing of summarization and conceptualization has made a wide range of things more abstract whenever we attempt to understand them. Originally, our “world” was everything, including what was made abstract, and there was a human ability that existed in order to sense this. This was the imagination. Something else that the human imagination has produced is the concept of the ghost. Ghosts exist in a way that transcends the time frame of the “now” as well as physical space while not having actual substance themselves. Put another way, we might say that ghosts function as media or interfaces that stir the imagination. This Kyoto exhibition of the Japan Media Arts Festival explores the simultaneous presence and absence of humanity by presenting media as a place for spurring our imaginations on the theme of ghosts.

Ghosts are something created by the human imagination, an ability furnished by us in order to perceive the world. Transcending time and space, ghosts function as media or interfaces that stir the imagination. This exhibition at a theatre explores the theme of ghosts based on this idea, searching for the simultaneous presence and absence of mankind.

Celebrating its 20th edition this year, the Japan Media Arts Festival showcases the various forms of artistic expression created with new media today, including cinema, manga, animation, computers, and media using electronic devices. This Kyoto satellite exhibition comprises exhibits exploring the binary of human absence/presence by presenting media as a place for stirring the imagination on the theme of ghosts, offering a uniquely theatrical viewing experience.
