PROGRAM
Bringing together the traditional harvest dance sanbaso and other classical performance styles
Marking the tenth anniversary of ROHM Theatre Kyoto, this sanbaso dance is brought to life in different traditional styles.
The sanbaso is an old dance celebrating a bountiful harvest, performed after the okina dance that prays for peace. Along with the kyogen version, there are also many sanbaso performances in joruri puppetry and kabuki as well as various examples from regional folk performance around Japan, where it is staged as a wedding dance.
This performance features different kinds of sanbaso across genres, from kyogen to Awaji’s joruri puppetry and Kyoto-style nihon-buyo dance, nagauta music, and kagura dance from the village of Take near Mount Hayachine. Marking the milestone of ten years since opening, ROHM Theatre Kyoto invites you to enjoy the richness and joy of traditional Japanese performing arts that are still alive today through the sanbaso, rooted in people’s daily lives and passed down with their prayers.
